A NEW DECADE…
Eight more days until a new decade… yikes!  This decade has been a monumental one for me personally - two college graduations, marriage, home purchases, and Brooks - and running has been a leveling constant throughout.  As I log my December mileage I tally more than 25,000 miles this past decade; that’s a lot of trials of miles and miles of trials.  Brooks has encouraged me to run my best these past six years.  I hope that Brooks will inspire you to run and be active in 2010 and beyond!

Let me begin by saying that if you’re in the Inspire Daily Program, you ARE an influencer in running.  In fact, there are so many qualified members of this program that we decided to cut back on general product sponsorships and allocate more resources to programs like the race series, regional events, positive media awards, and the Flotrack ID micro Web site.  (see side for details).

However, we did create two levels, P.A.C.E. (Performance And Coaching Elite) and Bluestreak, for members with exceptional influence or unabiding passion for Brooks.

In reponse to several questions regarding the selection criteria for these groups I wanted to provide a few examples of Bluestreak members below.  These members represent our highest level of sponsorship.  Anyone can obtain this level in the future by demonstrating their passion for Brooks and becoming more involved
in their respective running communities.

Greg Meyer - Greg is the last American male to win the Boston Marathon… enough said!  However, he also coaches a successful high school program in Michigan, and continues to speak on Brooks behalf at major marathons including… you guessed it - Boston.

Lesley Higgins - Lesley was a former All-American at the University of Colorado and made the finals of the women’s steeple chase in the 2008 Olympic Trials.  She also
helps recruit, organize, and manage the NYAC women’s running team; NYAC has one of the most competitive woman’s teams in the country.

Tom Cotner - If you run and live in the Seattle-metro area you know Tom.  Tom is a former board member of the University of Washington medical school and is a USTAF board member and race course certifier.  He coaches for Club Northwest and also coaches most of the elite athletes in the greater Seattle area.

Diane Groff - Diane is a two-time breast cancer survivor.  She coaches a group of other cancer survivors, races as a competitive age-group athlete, writes for the National Association of Team Survivor Quarterly Newsletter, has an active blog, and is active in numerous events, seminars, and talks.

These are only a few examples of the members of Team Bluestreak and the I.D. Program.  In 2010 we plan to share more of your stories and passions through our new ID micro Web site.  If you have
an inspirational story involving yourself or another member, please send me an email so I can share it with everyone.

2010 MICRO SITE
In early February we will unveil a new ID micro Web site created by Flotack exclusively for I.D. members.  There will be user accounts, message boards, video updates, member profiles, product info, and the new race series.  This will be a one-stop shop for all things Inspire Daily!
RACE SERIES
We are also creating a new race series exclusively for you! There will be 376 awards ranging from free product to travel expenses to a Rock ‘n’ Roll vacation package.  To be eligible all you need is membership in the Program, a user account on the new micro site, and to enter race results when you complete them.  There will be two national champions, 20 regional champions, 100 state champions, 100 state runner ups, and 100 state second runner ups.  There will also be random monthly and quarterly prize drawings.  I will provide more info on the
series in early January.
POSITIVE MEDIA EXPOSURE AWARDS RETURN
Dozens of you took advantage of the PME awards in 2009.  I received race pictures published in magazines, journals, and
Web sites, and articles written mentioning Brooks and Brooks I.D.  You can download the current PME form at www.brooksrunning.com/id and it will eventually be on the new ID micro Web site.  Remember, any time you give positive exposure to Brooks
you are eligible for an award whether it’s a picture, video,
article, speaking engagement, etc.
2010 UNIFORMS
The new uniforms will be mailed to everyone in early
February.  I included the pictures of the women’s collection below.  It includes the women’s shimmel, shorts, jacket, and long sleeve Equilibrium.  The men’s collection is similar with slight variations.

Please note: If you answered "coach" on the application you will receive the jacket instead of the singlet and shorts.

If you answered "club team" or "triathlete" you will NOT receive the singlet.

They are expensive to produce and we don’t want to send them to members who won’t wear them.  However, if you plan to also compete in running races or your club team has changed you can request a singlet and shorts prior to February.

MARATHON SEASON…
For those of you running marathons…we salute you!

I often wonder why the arbitrary distance of 26.2 miles compels us to change our sleeping, eating, and daily life routines to ultimately torture our bodies. I’ve tried to convince my exercise-declined family to run, but my ultimate lack of rationality becomes my downfall. However, I’m relentless and will continue to ask, "anyone want to join me for a 90 minute run before we eat turkey? It makes nap time so much sweeter!"

Most of you are familiar with the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series with prominent races across the country.  Well, Brooks Sports recently signed an contract to be the exclusive apparel and footwear sponsor for the entire Rock ‘n’ Roll Series through 2012.  We plan to tailor many of our Inspire Daily events and programs around
this Series in 2010 and are excited about the doors in opens for Brooks Sports on many significant levels.

TWO MEMBERS CONNECT…
A note from a fellow I.D. Member…

"I wanted to write and share a great experience I had this weekend in San Jose. My wife and I made the drive down for this Rock ‘n’ Roll 1/2 on Sunday. Right around mile 5 I met another I.D. Member, Terry from just north of Memphis, TN. We ran together for most of mile 5 and, as much as was possible in the middle of a half marathon, connected. Coincidence happens all the time, but running into another I.D. Member in the middle of a race and to have it be a fellow from across the country who happens to be from your home state (I grew up in Chattanooga, TN) was awful fun. In addition to being an all around great guy, Terry has run all of the Rock ‘n’ Roll races since the April Nashville race. With 7 RnR’s under his belt he made me think about the Twitter post that I think I remember saying that Brooks was going to become the official shoe of RnR for 2010. Terry seems to be spreading the work ahead of the curve. Thanks again for including me in the I.D. Program this year. It has already been a blast and I hope to continue next year!"

BROOKS ATHLETES TRIUMPH AT MYOMED RAGNAR

Congratulations to Jeff Delauter, Tim Fisler, Susan Graham-Gray, and Bret Mower (I.D. Members) along with 8 other local area runners who triumphed in a field of 156 teams to win the prestigious MyoMed 199.3 Mile Ragnar Relay on Sept 25-26. The team averaged 6:49 pace and ran a total time of 22:42:52. The team traversed over miles of rural back roads, up and down MD/WVA mountains, through urban jungles, curvy park trails, suburbia, rain, night and day conditions and the C&O canal. The team beat the second-place shoe-sponsored team "Saucony Rocks" by over 28
minutes.

IT’S FALL MARATHON SEASON…
Yesterday I noticed the leaves on my maple tree beginning to change
as they waved from the crisp, chilly Autumn wind that made it’s
first appearance of the season.  For those of you tackling a
Fall Marathon - Best of luck!  There’s something stoic and
enchanting about this season; how quickly we forget the agony of
mile 24.

On a lighter note, I will be on vacation from Sept. 22 to Oct. 8 so
please contact Brooks customer service with any immediate
concerns.

in 2:51 for his record sixth victory in that race.  Stellar

GINA CROSSWHITE - Gina won the women’s title in her first
triathlon ever and finished 4th overall.  Great job, Gina!

DAN CUSHMAN - Dan won the Huntington’s Disease
Sprint Triathlon.  Way to go, Dan!

JONATHAN GUNDERSON - Jonathan finished his second
straight Badwater Ultra in a 5-hour personal record of
31:33:13.  Way to perservere, Jon!

JOHN REICH - John was the top masters finisher at the San
Diego AFC 1/2 Marathon.  Great job, John!

BOB AND JACKIE JACKMAN - Bob and Jackie were the male and
female champions at the Endurrn 60k race.  Great effort,
Jackmans!

COURTENAY BROWN AND SUNNY GILBERT - Courtenay won the
Seattle Danskin Triathlon and then finished second to Sunny at the
Portland Triathlon.  Nice work, ladies!

ANDREA POMARANSKI - Andrea finsihed 12th at the USATF 10
mile championships in the fast time of 57:52.  Great race,
Andrea!

GUY PETRUZZELLI - Guy won the Buckeye Challenge
Duathlon beating last year’s champion by over 5 minutes.  Way
to, Guy!

CATHERINE DEMET - Catherine was the top of the
40-45 year old age group at the World’s Largest Triathlon in
Chicago in 1:25:30.  Nice work, Catherine!
BROOKS BEAST WINs H2C

Four I.D. Members joined six Seattle-area Brooks athletes to win
the 2009 Hood to Coast Relay in a time of 16:55:30 (5:09 per
mile).  Team Brooks Beast was 3rd in 2007, 2nd in 2008, and
finally won, beating Nike on their home turf in 2009.  A great
time was had by all!

Calling all coaches (and athletes)!  All of our spikes are
marked down to 70% of MSRP on the web specials section of the pro
site for a limited time.  If your team needs spikes, or you
can use a new pair for XC or indoor track… now’s the time to buy.
I.D. TEES

If you haven’t been able to order your free I.D. tee on the pro
site, they are back online.  I believe we are out of the men’s
green and blue option, but the other three styles have ample
quantities.  Once they’re gone - they’re gone - so don’t
forget to order your tee.
ALL ACCESS 5K
Here is a note from fellow member, Ryan Conrad, about a 5k this
weekend in Virginia Beach:

The Tidewater Striders, in collaboration with Live Nation are
holding the ALL ACCESS 5k on September 20, 2009.  This flat
and fast course will start and finish backstage and run throughout
the concert grounds of the Verizon Wireless Virginia Beach
Amphitheather.  The post-race ALL ACCESS 5k award party with
food, beverages, tours of artist dressing rooms, and live music
will occur on the venue’s stage and backstage area.  Event
proceeds will enhance youth fitness and fight obesity in young
people through support for youth running programs in the greater
Hampton Roads Virginia area.  ID Members who attend the race
will have the opportunity to win free Brooks shoes as well!

You’ll have to forgive me if I didn’t include your shout-out this
month as I’ve been more busy than usual.  However, I would
like to send a special thank you to BILL LANGOUT,
a Minnesota member, who invited me to join his team to climb Mt
Rainier last weekend.  We successfully summited at 1:00PM, and
with the exception of a few rolling boulders, a dozen or so giant
crevasses, and a few headaches, everyone completed the
journey.  Thanks, Bill!

JASON SAITTA - Jason won the Steamboat Springs
Marathon.  This was his 9th overall victory and the 5th
straight victory at Steamboat!  Nice work, Jason!

SPENCER COCANOUR - Spencer was voted a USAT 2008
All American.  Awesome, Spencer!

DANIEL ARNETT - Dan received a 2008 USAT Honorable
Mention for the 30-35 age group.  Well done, Dan!

TROY AND EVE NELSON - The Nelsons were both USAT
All Americans for the 40-45 age group in 2008.  I bet you two
have a lot of gear in your house.  Nice job!

TODD GANGELHOFF - Todd won a very technical 50k in
5:29:14.  Way to go, Todd!

SUZANNA BON - Suzanna won the San Diego 100 Mile
Endurance Run in 19:32 with a new course record!  Congrats,
Suzanna!

KIM MCCONNELL - Kim was the women’s masters
champion at the Steamboat Springs 1/2 Marathon.  Great job,
Kim!

RYAN GREUTMAN - Ryan ran a 1:11:57 at the Sunburst
1/2 Marathon in Sounthbend, IN for 3rd place overall.  Nice

MEMPHIS TWILIGHT CLASSIC

Fellow Brooks I.D. Member, coach, and meet director for the Brooks
sponsored Memphis Twilight Classic, Bill Hoffman, is offering to

I.D. Members Mike Bresson, Forest Braden, Josh Eberly, James

finished 3rd overall in 2007, and 2nd overall in 2008.  Cheer
us on as we go for the overall title in 2009!  And if you’re
on another team, be sure to say hi to me on the beach…
SHOE DESIGN CONTEST

Last month I showed you Farra Karsen’s winning color design for the
GTS 10.  One of our footwear developers came back from Asia
with the actual shoes and will be sending them to Farra.  They
couldn’t make the exact match, but it still looks really cool!

SHOE DESIGN CONTEST
Rich Zartman, Brooks’ lead footwear designer, held a “coloring contest” for camp members to design a color palate for the Adrenaline™ GTS 12. Farra Karsen won with the above design and will have her own pair of GTS created in her design!  Jealous? Me, too!
EZ T DESIGN CONTEST

Our apparel Product LIne Manager, Beth Brewster, also held an EZ T design contest and while the winner is yet-to-be determined, I thought I would include one submission that caught my eye.  Mike Morgan, from the Hansons-Brooks ODP, designed the above EZ T with a runner leaving a Porta Potty. RUTH MALLORY - In a time of 1:34, Ruth finished as
the second place woman at the Zooma 1/2 Marathon in Austin,
TX.  Awesome, Ruth!

HAO LIU - Hao ran a 16 minute PR at the Eugene
Marathon in 3:20 following a 1:34 1/2 Marathon in April. 
Great progress, Hao!

ROB WILEY - Rob ran a personal best of 15:14 in
the Run That’s Good For Life 5k for sixth place overall.  Nice
work, Rob!

DAMIEN BATEMAN - Damien ran a 15:01 5k in New
Mexico at altitude to win the race.  Good job, Damien!

CHRIS WICKARD - Chris ran 1:28:32 at the Indy Mini
1/2 Marathon for a 2 min PR.  Sweet time, Chris!

JULIE O’NEIL - Julie was the top female finisher
at the Rhody Days 5k in Florence, OR.  Way to go, Julie!

BRIAN MORSEMAN - In a smokin’ time of 2:23:58,
Brian won the Pocono Run for the Red Marathon.  Nice work,
Brian!

TODD NOTT - Todd was the top master and second
place finisher at the Free State 100k Trail race.  Not too
shabby, Todd!

CATHERINE DEMET - Congrats to Catherine for being named a
class of 2009 USAT All-American Honorable mention triathlete for
the 40-44 age group!

LAUREL PARK - Laurel was the fourth woman in the
fast 5k time of 17:42.  Great effort, Laurel!

JILL KLAVERCAMP - Jill finished as the second
woman in the Fargo, ND 1/2 Marathon in the time of 1:23:32. 
Great job, Jill!

ALEX BARTH - Alex won the Long Island Greenbelt
Trail 50k in 4:24.  Awesome job, Alex!

TARYN GIBSON - While traveling to watch her
Brooks-Hansons boyfriend - Ryan Sheehan - race, she entered a 10k
and won in a time of 34:53.  That’s fast, Taryn!

JEAN POMMIER - Jean finished second overall in the
Quicksilver 50 mile recording a new age group record.  Nice
job, Jean!

TONY WHITE - Tony, a self proclaimed “triathlete”,
ran a personal best time of 1:14:47 at the Flying Pig 1/2
Marathon.  Way to go, Tony!

RYAN BURCH - Ryan won the Jemener Mountain 50 mile
race.  Great work, Ryan!

D’ARCY LYNCH - D’Arcy finished top of her age
group in 1:31:30 at the Chicago Magellan 1/2 Marathon.  Nice
job, D’Arcy!

THE LAUNCH

I have been notified that the Launch has been received at our
distribution center and is ready to order!  It should be on
the pro site for purchase in the next few days. 

The Launch is a new, lightweight (8 oz), neutral racing/training
shoe for anyone who desires a non-posted racer with a little more
cushion than the Racer ST.  Wear test feedback on this shoe
has been stellar and I’m pumped to try my first pair.  For
most ID marathoners, this will be an ideal shoe!
TODAY SHOW FINALISTS

Leigh Daniels and Olympic Trials Marathoner, Nick Cordes have made
the final four of the Today Show Throws a Wedding Contest. 
These two ID Members were profiled on NBC last
Wednesday  "font-size: 8pt;"> "font-family: times new roman,times;">and will be live on the show
tomorrow.  Following the show is a vote for the winning couple
- let’s support our fellow Brooks athletes and

CHRIS CALFEE’S STORY

I asked Chris to write a brief note to
everyone because his story is very relevant to running and
endurance sports.  Thanks for reading…

Runners beware.  We are not
 invincible.  After the
Shamrock Marathon, I was diagnosed with a blood clot in my
calf.

Furthermore, during a myriad of tests and
drawn blood, I was diagnosed with Factor V Leiden, an inherited
clotting disorder, as well as a Protein C
mutation.  Based on these factors, I am now at a
10-20 times greater risk of developing blood
clots.

I also learned that a steadily growing number
of runners and endurance athletes are being diagnosed with blood
clots.  Perhaps as much as 10% of the population
has Factor V.

My words of wisdom are
this.  Listen to your
body.   Stay hydrated. 
Avoid long trips following longer races. 
Remember that running is part of life not life equals running.

My future is one of slower times, a daily
regimen of blood thinners, and a greater appreciation of what it
means to inspire daily.

SPRING RACING…
Hopefully everyone has crawled out from winter hibernation and is preparing for a great season of racing. I’ve been receiving a lot of results which tells me that Spring Marathons are in full swing, and the local 5k’s, 10k’s, and triathlons are coming to fruition. Thanks for continuing to inspire me daily and best of luck in your racing goals this season!

PETER VAN WESTHUIZEN - Racing for Brooks-sponsored Team Nebraska, Peter recently recorded the seventh fastest 1500m in the world this year, finishing second at the Payton Jordan Invite in 3:37. Peter also finished second at the Kansas Relays Mile to Alan Webb in 3:59:54. What’s it feel like to run that fast, Peter?

FRANK LEITER - Frank finished second overall in the Hyner View Trail Challenge running 16.8 miles and climbing 4,222 feet. Way to go, Frank!

JOHNNY G WATSON - Johnny is the USATF masters indoor 60m champion setting a new American Record of 8.14 seconds! You’re a stud, Johnny!

JOEY WIEGNER - Prior to the Boston Marathon, Joey ran the inaugural BAA 5k in a fast time of 14:58 for third place overall. Nice work, Joey!

EMILY MCGREGOR - Running a huge PR, Emily completed the Paris Marathon in 2:53. Impressive, Emily!

NICK STANKO - Nick finished fifth overall at the very competitive George Washington Parkway 10 Mile in a great time of 49:14. For the non-math people, that’s sub-5 min miles for 10 miles! Great job, Nick!

BRIAN BAILLIE - Brian ran 2:31:08 at the St Louis Marathon for third place. Excellent job, Brian!

LEAH SCHARL - Leah finished first and second woman at the Running Fit and Martian 1/2 Marathons in Michigan this past month. Nice double, Leah!

ROSALVA BONILLA - Rosalva won the California Masters Marathon Championship at the OC Marathon last month. Way to go, Rosalva!

DAN KAHN - Dan won the Labor of Love 50k and then proceeded to win the Whiskey Row Marathon six days later for the second consecutive year. Incredible, Dan!

RYAN BURCH - Ryan recently ran a huge PR at the Colorado Marathon in 2:44:59 for sixth place overall. Great job, Ryan!

REBECCA MARSH - Rebecca finished first in her age group at the May Classic 5k in Tampa in a fast time of 18:59. Way to go, Rebecca!

KELLY FILLNOW - Kelly set a new PR in a recent 1/2 Ironman in 4:44, as the top woman and seventh overall finisher and the fastest run split of the day. Awesome work, Kelly!
POSITIVE MEDIA EXPOSURES
I’ve received close to 40 positive media exposures in 2009 with each exposure earning the member a free WVR apparel item. If you mention Brooks or Brooks ID in a newspaper article, online column, give a presentation, or are wearing Brooks gear in any of these media you are eligible for an award. RUNNING’S #1 SUPERFANS
As I mentioned in a recent email, Brooks launched a new ad campaign at the Boston Marathon called the “Running’s #1 Superfans.” Comedians Randy and Jason Sklar (from ESPN’s “Cheap Seats”) play running’s biggest fans in several online videos and an interactive microsite. We also hosted a mock revivalist tent at the Boston Marathon where the Sklars gave a 20-minute stand-up routine featuring a life-size macaroni statue of Brian Sell, a six-person running choir, velvet paintings, chandeliers, and more. MARYELLEN LOUCKS
Maryellen assisted an Iraq War vet at the Boston Marathon this year and her story was so inspiring that I thought I would share it with everyone!

“Having Multiple Sclerosis myself, anything physical makes me feel normal. Having run five prior Boston Marathons, the last three for the National MS Team I again made the decision to run back in November. I didn’t feel right asking people for financial support this year with the current economic situation. I started training, but my runs felt empty. I needed a greater purpose to push through those 20-mile
training days. So I contacted the Achilles Track Club which partners able bodied athletes with disabled athletes. My partner was a 37-year-old soldier who served in Iraq and returned with a traumatic brain injury. I coached him via email all winter and we finally met two nights before marathon day. We had only run a few
miles when he became tired and unsure he could run any further, but was content to walk. I was so proud wearing my guide bib (my own number never seen underneath). I encouraged him for 26.2 miles, occasionally asking for crowd support. He never wanted to quit, and with dedication and determination we walked across the finish in Boston in 7 hours and 16 minutes. I think being a part of the Brooks Inspire Daily family helped me keep on task with a smile on my face. A Boston Marathon I’ll never forget!”

Marathon in Germantown, TN in 1:14 and 1:16 respectively.

Run 50k in Maryland.  Way to go, Frank!

LAUREL PARK - Laurel was 2nd overall and the 1st
woman at the Bill Roney Memorial 5k in 18:09.  This was
Laurel’s first run following a injury and I think she’s back!

CHRIS LAYMEN - Chris won the Spurs 5k in San
Antonio as former Spurs basketball player Sean Elliot cheered him
on.  That’s got to feel good, Chris!

JOSH WEST - Josh recently finished 3rd at the Carl
Touchstone 50 mile and 5th at the Oak Mtn 50k.  Nice job,
Josh!

JILL KLAVERKAMP - Jill finished 4th at the USATF
8k Championships in 29:04.  Great work, Jill!

KIM MCCONNELL - Kim was the 1st masters woman out
of over 18,000 runners at the Capitol 10k in Austin, TX.  Only
18,000, Kim?  Awesome!

ALISA SPRINGMAN - Alisa was 2nd overall and 1st
female at the Lost 118 mile in Lake Okeechobee as she broke both
the former men’s and women’s course records in 24 hours, 45
minutes.  Alisa is our April ID Member of the month - check
our her profile at www.brooksrunning.com/id.
CARLSBAD or CARLSGOOD?

Okay, sorry for the bad pun.  I met over 20 members this past
weekend at the Carlsbad 5k in Carlsbad, CA.  We also had
several members complete the Oceanside 70.3 Ironman and we had a
few Kona qualifiers!  There were many fast times run (swam and
biked) and a good time had by all at the post-race party at Pizza
Port.

INAUGURAL ID CAMP

If you applied to attend the I.D. Camp this June
you should have received an email saying whether or not you were
drawn in the lottery.  We have had some cancellations, and
will pull names from the waiting list to fill these spots.  My
hope is that each member will get the opportunity to spend a
weekend with us one day!

17:22.  Great PR, Taryn and you’ll outkick them next time!

GUY PETRUZZELLI - Guy won the Midwest Indoor
Duathlon Championship breaking the course record by over three
minutes!  Fabulous effort, Guy!

JENNIFER HANLEY-PINTO - Jennifer finished 5th
overall in the Disney World Princess 1/2 Marathon in a time of
1:24:14.  Nice work, Jennifer!

SHAWN DODGE - Shawn was recently awarded the Army Athlete
of the Year Award for 2008!  If I’m not mistaken, the Army is
quite large and this is an impressive accomplishment, Shawn!

SAMANTHA WOOD - Samantha was 4th overall and the
2nd women at the recent Prickly Pear 50k in San Antonio, TX. 
Great job, Samantha!

BRAD HOOPER - Brad is our March
Member-of-the-Month.  Brad is a competitive runner,

CARLSBAD 5K AND BOSTON MARATHON
Our fist two events of 2009 are approaching.  Everyone is
invited to attend our post-race socials following the Carlsbad 5k
and Boston Marathon next month.  We have reserved some tables
at Pizza Port in Carlsbad beginning at 3PM on Sunday, April 5th and
several billiard tables and bowling lanes at Kings Bowling in
Boston on Monday, April 20th at 2:30PM.  Please plan to come
hang out with us and other members following these two races.

are the St. Paddy’s Dash in Seattle on Sunday, March 15th and then
the Carlsbad 5k and Boston Marathon in April.  Remember, if
you plan to race any of these events, send me the race and
